A lock on the latest iPhone to control the source of batteries

The “battery Status” on iOS seems to depend on a lock that pushes to turn towards the authorised repairers in the event of replacement of its battery.

In other words, if you do change your iPhone battery XR or XS out of the circuit the Apple Store or repairers selected by Apple, but that the technician was still able to get an original battery Apple, iOS, considered that it requires intervention. The battery will work, iOS does not bridera not its performance, but “battery Status” will advise to go to the customer SERVICE.

It is this that has found Justin, the Youtubeur of TheArtofRepair and iFixit was able to confirm with his own tests. In his video, Justin get an Apple battery for iPhone XR and after its installation, the iPhone works. However “battery Status” warns that it is best to bring the phone in for SERVICE.

“Battery status” considers that this battery needs a replacement

In the aftermath, the Youtubeur installs a battery pack generic. After a reboot, “battery Status” regains all of its faculties, and treats the component as if it was original and had been installed by a SERVICE dealer. For these two batteries, the serial number of the model present in the iPhone has been transferred, they were identical on this point.

The difference lies in the presence of a component of Texas Instrument which checks the state of charge, state of health of the battery. It has nothing exceptional and other than Apple use it. But it is capable of providing an authentication service software which apparently Apple uses.

A battery is generic but is nevertheless recognized by the function “battery Status”

Justin has detached the battery from the XR this external controller, and has grafted on to the battery a generic. A delicate operation that requires also to manipulations of the software and that it does not recommend. But in the end, the battery generic has taken on the trappings of a battery official installed by Apple. While Apple’s battery devoid of this appendix authentication has not been regarded as fully compatible.

This behavior would be reserved for the iPhone launched last year, whether they are on iOS 12 or 13 (one of our player had made the observation opposite to what is explained here, but we had not been able to check his phone, reading iOS 13 : batteries, non-Apple are no longer ignored by “State farm”).

Apple has let go of the reins on the management of batteries third. In the Apple Store, the iPhone with a generic component or installed by third parties are supported since last February (with a little specificity to the Apple Store in French).

Here she distinguishes between the Apple battery installed by its authorised network and Apple’s battery that are procured by a third party who officiate in the periphery of this circuit.

We can discuss the merits of the process ― after all, in both cases the component is assumed to be of the same quality ― but it answers to a logic of tight control of Apple’s share, vis-à-vis a room in which several incidents have reminded that its handling requires caution. After one of our contacts at Apple, this audit dates back to iOS 10 but it does not appear to the user that the from iOS 11, and since the iPhone 8 and X.
