Gastro-enteritis epidemic spreads out and hits all the regions

In winter, the infectious and contagious diseases are back, starting with the gastro-enteritis. Vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pains, sometimes fever and headache… This digestive disorder violent manifests itself in many ways.


In its second national report card of the year, and from 6 to 12 January 2020, the network for health surveillance in Sentinel reported 398 cases of gastro-enteritis per 100 000 inhabitants on average in metropolitan France. Year estimate strongly increase compared to the first week of the year : on December 30, 2019 to January 5, 2020, the network reported 326 boxes per 100 000 inhabitants.


At the regional level, the highest incidence rates were observed in Countries of the Loire (667 cases /100 000 inhabitants), in the Hauts-de-France (568 cases/100 000 inhabitants) and in New-Aquitaine (489 cases/100 000 inhabitants). More generally, the map demonstrates an expanding intense of the epidemic to the entire territory and a significant increase in the number of boxes.

The Sentinel network always evokes year “activity high”in the increase. Stis observed incidence is higher than that of the last ten seasons. However, this increase is not unusual in the winter season. The percentage ofhospitalizations related to the gastro is estimated to be 0.3%. According to forecasts based on historical data, the epidemic peak is reached, and the level of activity of the suffering from acute diarrhea should decrease in the course of the third week of January.

The beginning of the year 2020 has not been spared by the epidemic of gastro-enteritis. From 6 to 12 January 2020, the network for health surveillance Sentinels were 326 cases of gastro-enteritis per 100 000 inhabitants on average in metropolitan France. The regions most affected were the New-Aquitaine, the region Is Great, and the Countries of the Loire. The forecasts predicted a decline of the epidemic to the beginning of the year. We are still waiting.

And on the side of the chicken pox ?


The network health monitoring also provides the balance sheet of the development of other contagious diseases that are rampant in the Hexagon. From 6 to 12 January, the cards are of a low activity of the varicella (10 boxes/100 000 last week, compared to 16 boxes per 100 000 in the very beginning of the year 2020). The activity slows down. The regions most impacted are the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’azur, the Grand Is and the Hauts-de-France.

To prevent the transmission of gastro-enteritis, hygiene measures are needed.
– Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or using a hydroalcoholic gel.
– Limit and especially the direct contacts with the infected people.
Clean the surfaces that are used frequently such as door handles, toilet bowls, sinks or even the keyboards of your phone.
– Take a course of probiotics to restore your intestinal flora, damaged by the gastro.
