The victory of the Republican candidate was a shock to the Democratic President.

The enmity between Barack Obama and Donald Trump is well known. During the last American presidential campaign, the Democratic president had explained that he was convinced of the Republican candidate's defeat, simply because he had faith in his people.

It might be said that the 44th president of the United States was surprised on November 8, 2016, when the same people surprised him to make Donald Trump his successor in the Oval Office. More than two years later, CNN gave new details of this reaction.

The American site is based on a new edition of the biography of Barack Obama written by The New York Times correspondent in the White House, Peter Baker: "he describes the president questioning his legacy and his sense of being personally insulted by the fact that voters preferred Trump to Clinton, for whom he had campaigned extensively in the last days leading up to November 8.»

In his book, Peter Baker writes, " Barack Obama woke up on Election Day convinced, like most of the country, that he would not give the nuclear suitcase to Donald Trump. The reality star, he thought, was a bad joke. There is no chance that the Americans will turn to him."

Clinton responsible for his defeat

In another excerpt reported by The Hill, Peter Baker said that Barack Obama had difficulty accepting this result, which hurt him personally, and said that the Americans "could not have decided to replace it with a showman who was a bit of a jerk whose only signatures were repeated bankruptcies, serial marriages and racist foot calls."

According to the former US president and his team, Trump's victory was mostly Hillary Clinton's defeat, Baker said. For them, " it was she who failed to translate her good economic performance into a winning message. It doesn't matter that Trump did the same thing that Obama did eight years ago, presenting it as the corrupt example of the status quo. She was responsible for all her problems."

The Daily Mail repeated this scathing passage: "no one forced her to underestimate the danger of the Midwestern states. No one forced her to set up a private server for her emails that would come back to haunt her. No one forced her to take hundreds of thousands of dollars from Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street pillars for speeches. No one forced her to run a scripted, soulless campaign that tested 85 slogans before she got to "Stronger Together".»

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have not yet responded publicly. According to another excerpt quoted by Fox News, shortly after the election, the latter apologized to Obama for "letting him down."
