Controllers, PS4 and Xbox One S on iOS 13, and Apple TV : make your games !

The radius of incompatibilities maintained by Apple, this was not the level of the inability to read a USB key on the iPad, but not far : to play with the controller on Apple TV, iPad or iPhone, you need to necessarily have a model MFi. In the same way that iOS 13 is friend-friend with the USB key, the system finally opens to the controllers the most popular on the market, the DualShock 4 and the controller of the Xbox One.

It is a phew of relief for two reasons. For one, it is a purchase if you already own one of these gamepads. Of two, devices from Sony and Microsoft are better than any other controller MFi, without being more expensive.

During the keynote of WWDC 2019, Tim Cook announced the compatibility of these two controllers with the Apple TV, but they are all the terminals under tvOS 13, iOS 13, and iPadOS 13 who benefit, as we have checked with the early betas.

To connect these devices to an Apple device, it is necessary to follow the typical procedure of the pairing. On iOS, go to Settings > Bluetooth. On Apple TV, it is in Settings > remote and devices > Bluetooth.

To activate the pairing of the DualShock 4, it is necessary to press simultaneously on the buttons Share and PlayStation for several seconds. For the controller of Microsoft, it is necessary to press the small connect button located on the top. Note that it is the controller of the Xbox One S or the Xbox One X that is compatible (as it is Bluetooth), not the one of the first Xbox One (which exclusively uses a protocol Wi-Fi owner).

Once the controller from Sony or Microsoft, is connected to the device, it is automatically recognized by the games are compatible with joysticks and you can navigate in the interface of tvOS 13 with. It’s as simple as that.

You can connect two controllers at the same time, or even more (we have tested up to three with the DualShock). However, the games iOS that have multiplayer on the same screen does not run the streets.

In games

Our experience in multi with Badland has not been very conclusive : if the three controllers were recognized, there was a stability issue preventing them from playing properly. This may be adjusted over the beta, unless this is a problem specific to the game. Otherwise, no worry to play Fortnite on iPad (Pro) with the DualShock 4 — lsa latency is negligible.

In addition to the games native to the platforms of Apple, we can very well operate the controllers, Sony and Microsoft with streaming services. Thus, it has played both in co-operation with Guacamelee on Apple TV via Shadow (a PC in the cloud that is streamé) with DualShock 4.

At the present time, iOS 13 still presents a limitation for these controllers consoles : the Select button (” Share “on the DualShock 4, “Display” on your Xbox controller) is not supported. This is not a problem for games on iOS, but it can be for PC games/consoles, which are played in streaming. This requires you to reconfigure the buttons of the controller, when it is possible. It is hoped that Apple will complement this support in the course of the betas.

DualShock 4 or Xbox ?

What controller should I choose in the end ? To start, the DualShock 4 controller and the Xbox are both advantageous compared to the gamepad MFi. They are comfortable, have more buttons and are natively supported by almost all platforms : iOS/tvOS/iPad OS 13, macOS, Android and Windows (on Windows, you need to install a utility for the DualShock 4, and on Mac, it should be a utility for the Xbox if you want to connect other than Bluetooth).

The controller MFi SteelSeries Nimbus (59 €) has a port Lightning convenient for Apple users, but its compatibility is limited to devices of the Apple and it has no buttons L3, R3, and Select if you want to play console games by streaming.

Then, if you have a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One S/X, the question does not arise. Otherwise, each device has its followers. Some people prefer the DualShock 4, other the thumb of Microsoft.

Be aware that the DualShock 4 works on battery and can be recharged by microUSB. The Xbox by default uses two AA batteries (LR6) provided. A refill kit, which includes a battery and a microUSB cable is sold separately 22,99 €.

The price of the DualShock 4 oscillates between 50 and 60 €, while the Xbox is most often at 50 €. They are from time to time as a promotion for a lower price (the Microsoft more often than the Sony).

Finally, if it is to accompany an iPhone, there are
pliers DualShock and Xbox sold less than € 10 which allow you to hook the iPhone to the controllers.
