New elections in Spain in a climate of tense

The Spaniards voted Sunday for the fourth elections in four years in a climate weighed down by the crisis in the Catalan and the rise of the extreme right, an election that does not seem to be able to put an end to the political instability.

Made during several days before the election, the purpose distributed to the polling stations close at 19h GMT, the final polls predicted a victory of the leader of the socialist government, outgoing Pedro Sanchez with an average of nearly 120 mps, compared to 123 at the end of the last election, in April.

Vox, the far-right party entered the parliament in April with 24 seats, would become the third force with approximately 50 seats while the conservatives of the popular Party (PP) would have delivered the worst result in their history (66 seats in April) and would be a little less than 90 seats.

According to these investigations, neither a block of the left (PSOE, left-radical Podemos and its list of dissenting Mas Pais) or an alliance of the right (PP, VOX and the liberals Ciudadanos) does not reach the absolute majority of 176 seats out of 350.

Significant results are expected around 21h GMT. At 17h GMT, the participation was down nearly four points at 56,86%.

Six months after the last elections, Pedro Sanchez had asked the 37 million voters to give him a clear majority to end the political deadlock that undermines the fourth economy of the euro area from 2015.

But if the results are faithful to the polls, he will have to settle at best a fragile minority government was obliged to negotiate support on a case-by-case basis in Parliament.

Mr. Sanchez does not hide that he would prefer to govern alone in a minority rather than reach an agreement with Podemos, with which his negotiations have failed after the April elections, because their differences are too big on the file catalan.

The solution will therefore have to pass by an abstention of the conservative PP, which have been excluded from the make-up here, even if most analysts expect they will eventually do so, to avoid the wrath of the voters.

For José Ignacio Torreblanca, European Council on Foreign Relations, Sanchez plans to get “the abstention from all at the last minute, at the risk of pushing us to the edge of the infarct”.

Vox has surfed on the crisis in Catalan

A few weeks after the protests have degenerated into violence following the conviction in mid-October of nine leaders from independence to long prison sentences for the attempted secession of 2017, Catalonia has dominated the campaign.

And Vox, the leader, Santiago Abascal advocates the banning of parties, the separatists, the suspension of the autonomy of Catalonia, and the arrest of its chairman independence Quim Torra, has been the beneficiary.

“I’ve always voted PP goal given the situation, I believe that it is necessary to use the high way” with Catalonia and immigration, another central theme of the campaign from Vox, said a friend, Ana Escobedo.

On Sunday, Rafael Garcia, 84 years of age, indicated that they had voted for the right in Madrid to defend “the unity of Spain”, without wishing to say for what party.”Stand in front of the franco’s regime”

Pedro Sanchez has tried to mobilize the electorate to the left against the rise of Vox, whom he presents as a return of the dictatorship, denouncing the right, which has not hesitated to ally themselves with the party to take control of Andalusia, the region most populated of Spain, the region of Madrid, the richest, and the town hall of the capital.

“Spain needs a government progressive, to stand up to the franco regime, the extremists and radicals”, he repeated tirelessly.

In a district of Madrid, where Vox has exploited the malaise of a part of the population vis-à-vis a centre welcoming young migrants, David Barcelo, engineer of 25 years, denounced the fact that “Vox said just what people want to hear, using of the false data”.
